JUSTIN MANOR, SOSOLIMITED, BOSTON
The American artist and designer Justin Manor spends a lot of time manipulating live data with custom software and hardware that he has developed. He is a founding partner of the art and technology studio Sosolimited, which began in 2003 as a DJ and VJ crew. Their first shows were at nightclubs and festivals were electronic music accompanied by reactive motion graphics.
Sosolimited began experimenting with transforming live television broadcasts and gained international attention when they remixed the US Presidential debates in 2004 and 2008 (ReConstitution 2008). Software written by Justin and his two collaborators Eric Gunther and John Rothenberg records everything the speakers on television say, and then sorts the spoken information into thematic and emotional units. The on-screen actors can be tested for qualities like vagueness, aggression, or positive emotionality, and the results displayed in realtime.
In addition to live media performances, Justin works on varied projects involving large scale information visualization for commercial and academic clients. Justin is also exploring expressive uses of LED lighting in architecture and personalized content delivery to mobile devices. His commercial clients include HBO, LG, MIT, The Broad Institute, Vice, and YouTube. Justin's artworks have been exhibited around the world, including Ars Electronica, ICA London, Fondation Cartier, and the Shanghai Biennial.
