DR. PROF. HARALD WELZER, SOCIOLOGIST AND SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGIST, ESSEN
As director of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Memory Research in Essen, Harald Welzer supervises projects within Climate & Culture, a new research unit at the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) in Essen. Moreover, he is also professor of social psychology at the University of Witten/Herdecke, affiliated member of faculty of the MARIAL Center at Emory University (Atlanta, USA) and member of various scientific advisory boards and academies.
His main foci of research and teaching are memory, group violence and socio-cultural climate impact research. Harald Welzer is arguably one of the most in-demand speakers at present when it comes to the issue of sustainability.
He holds the keynote speech at see#6 and talks about the behavioural patterns of human beings. Harald Welzer’s books have been translated into 15 languages. Some of his selected publications are "Klimakriege. Wofür im 21. Jahrhundert getötet wird", (Climate Wars. What People Will Kill for in the 21st century) and together with Claus Leggewie "Das Ende der Welt, wie wir sie kannten", (The end of the world as we know it). His latest publication together with Ariane Eichenberg and Christian Gudehus is "Erinnerung und Gedächtnis. Ein interdisziplinäres Handbuch" (Recall and memory. An interdisciplinary manual).
